What is a Character Counter?

A character counter is a tool that counts the number of characters in a piece of text in real time. Unlike a word counter, a character counter is especially useful when you need to stay within a specific character limit — such as a tweet, an SMS message, a meta description, or a social media bio.

ToolSnap's character counter goes beyond a simple count. It includes platform presets so you can instantly see how much space you have left for the most popular platforms, with a color-coded progress bar that turns yellow when you're close and red when you've gone over.

How to Use the Character Counter

  1. Type or paste your text into the text box. The character count updates instantly.
  2. Select a platform (optional) to enable the limit tracker. The progress bar shows how close you are to the limit.
  3. Watch the progress bar — it stays green while you have room, turns yellow at 80%, and turns red if you go over.
  4. Copy your text or Clear the box using the buttons below.

Platform Character Limits

  • Twitter / X — 280 characters per post.
  • Instagram bio — 150 characters.
  • Instagram caption — 2,200 characters, though only the first 125 are shown before "more".
  • LinkedIn post — 3,000 characters.
  • SMS — 160 characters per single message. Messages over 160 characters are split and billed as multiple SMS.
  • Meta description — Google typically displays 150–160 characters. Keeping it under 160 avoids truncation in search results.
  • YouTube title — 100 characters, though Google truncates titles after around 60 characters in search results.
  • YouTube description — 5,000 characters maximum.

Characters vs. Words: What's the Difference?

A character is any single unit of text — a letter, number, space, punctuation mark, or emoji. A word is a group of characters separated by spaces. Most social media platforms and messaging services enforce character limits rather than word limits, which is why a character counter is essential when writing for these platforms.

Note that emojis often count as more than one character depending on the platform. Twitter counts most emojis as two characters due to Unicode encoding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes, spaces count as characters on virtually all platforms. The counter shows both "Characters" (including spaces) and "No spaces" so you can see both values.

Do emojis count as one character?

This depends on the platform. In this counter, each emoji counts as the number of Unicode code points it occupies — typically 1 or 2. Twitter counts most emojis as 2 characters. Always verify emoji counts on the target platform.

Does it work offline?

Yes. All processing happens in your browser. Once the page is loaded, no internet connection is required.

Is there a character limit for the input?

No hard limit. The counter can handle very long texts without performance issues.
